As of April 10th 2016, ALFAOBD is able to perform proxy alignments, add sales codes and enable dealer level options on your vehicle. If you add a sales code or enable any settings under the car configuration active diagnostic on the BCM you will need to perform a Proxy alignment immediately to prevent module misalignment. I have AlfaOBD for PC and also for Android. For the $49 fee I'd say it's worth it to buy and then do some experimenting on your own. There's a lot to grasp and if you despise the dealer service clowns as much as I do you'll certainly need to learn the depths of AlfaOBD personally.

Previously, I wrote about lowering the default TPMS threshold from 60/80 PSI using AlfaOBD and the BAFX OBD bluetooth scanner. This post assumes you already have a scanner, but if not, I’ve found BAFX the cheapest option at around $21 on Amazon.

Recently, I misplaced one of the RAM keys and wanted to have another backup. Normally replacing keys on newer vehicles has become a nightmare because of all the radio frequency sensors built into the keys and FOBs. RAM trucks have this same technology built into their FOBIK and proximity keys. Having a locksmith or dealer program a new key would easily cost $100-300. Luckily, we can program a new RAM key off Amazon at home for around $18.

Step 1: Get Necessary Software and Hardware and your PIN

In my TPMS post, I walk you through how to get all the necessary programming AlfaOBD software and OBD Scanner hardware. If you don’t have a OBD scanner that connects to an Android phone, you’ll need to add about $21 for the cheapest scanner that will work.

  • Android phone with AlfaOBD – you’ll need the full verison. Cost is $49 on the Play Store, but you can also get it free by searching “AlfaOBD apk”. Use a website like virustotal.com to scan it first if you download it that way
  • OBD Scanner – needs to be bluetooth or WiFI enabled. BAFX OBD Scanner is the cheapest at $21 or you can go upgraded to the $99 OBDLink MX+
  • RAM Replacement Key – buy the correct version for your RAM truck. I purchased this $18 key FOB with lock/unlock and the panic button
  • RAM 4 digit PIN – you can get this for free at your local dealership. They only give it out at the Parts counter in person. You have to bring your ID and registration to prove ownership

Step 2: Program FOB with AlfaOBD

If you have the following items from above, you can now go out to the truck with a working key and the new key. If done correctly, this should only take about 5 minutes tops.

  1. Plug in your OBD reader and turn the truck ignition to the run position (without starting) with the working key
  2. Turn on phone’s bluetooth and connect to OBD reader. Open AlfaOBD and press bluetooth icon, select your OBD reader. To function, I had to allow AlfaOBD permission to access files on my phone.
  3. Select Ram and your vehicle from the main AlfaOBD menu. Select RADIO FREQUENCY HUB(RFH) function. Select the Control Unit from the list that matches your year model. You may need to try multiple options from the Control Unit list if at first it doesn’t work.
  4. Press red Connect button. Once connected, press car icon in lower right corner with the open hood.
  5. From “Select procedure to start” menu, choose “Program Ignition FOBIKs Baseline System”

  6. Remove your working key and insert the new key. Leave the ignition in the OFF position.
  7. Enter your 4 digit PIN and press START. It will program the new key.
  8. Done! You can now unplug everything, remove the key. Test the lock/unlock button and try to start the truck.

If you have a proximity key with push button start, you would follow the directions in AlfaOBD for that key type. The proximity key would need to rest somewhere on the center dash by the radio to program. You can also go get the key blank cut at the hardware store (like Ace Hardware) if you desire.

You should now have programmed your new key without going to the expensive dealer or locksmith!

AlfaOBD is a software for the diagnostics of the vehicles produced by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) group. Fiat / Alfa Romeo / Lancia cars produced in 1994-2017, and Chrysler / Dodge / Ram / Jeep cars of model years 2005-2017 are supported. Although the software is primarily targeted for car owners, it provides many of the features of the professional scanners.

AlfaOBD natively supports Electronic Control Units (ECU) installed on the FCA group vehicles. The native support differs AlfaOBD from many other diagnostic applications providing the OBD II generic support which only provides the access to the engine and transmission modules.

AlfaOBD is supported on the Windows PC and Android devices.

AlfaOBD features include:

  • monitoring various dynamic parameters of body, dash, code, engine, gearbox, ABS, climate control, etc. and graphical presentation as adjustable plots
  • reading of static data: ECU id, system status, fault codes with probable causes and environment information where applicable
  • clearing fault codes, monitoring the system for the appearance of new faults
  • active diagnostics and configuration procedures for various equipment controlled by engine, gearbox, body computer, climate control, ABS, airbag, code control and other ECUs. Service light reset, engine oil change, DPF regeneration and many more.

Note: Starting from Model Year 2018 (Fiat 500L from MY2017) FCA installs the Security Gateway Module (SGW) which blocks access to diagnostics for the third-party software. There is no software solution yet, as a workaround please use a hardware bypass module (as an example).
Owners of Alfa Romeo Giulia/Stelvio, Fiat 500X/Toro/Jeep Renegade/Compass (MP) : make sure that the bypass supports the second high-speed CAN bus, the one that is connected to the pins 12 and 13 of the car OBD port. The updated version of bypass currently delivered by Zautomotive supports all the CAN buses.

If you have an older Zautomotive model here is how to modify Zautomotive device (thanks to Fulvio from Italy for the solution and the permission to publish it) :
Open the Zautomotive device and solder two wires: connect pins A1 and A2, and connect pins A8 and A9 (see the picture). Modification is the same for the first and the second model of the device.

The software requires a compatible OBD interface. At present the following types of interfaces are supported:

  • OBDLink MX+, EX, LX and SX. OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth or OBDLink EX USB are the recommended interfaces for the cars with high-speed CAN bus on pins 6 and 14 and the middle-speed CAN bus on the pins 3 and 11 of the OBD plug. These are most of the PowerNet and CUSW-based Chrysler/Dodge/Ram/Jeep vehicles starting from about 2012, and also Fiat Tipo/Egea. No additional adapters are needed for these cars when using OBDLink EX or MX+. As the OBDLink interfaces have high communication speed they are especially recommended for the Body computer configuration adjustment and odometer correction on Chrysler/Dodge/Ram/Jeep vehicles.
    Note: Alfa Romeo Giulia/Stelvio, Fiat 500X/Toro and Jeep Renegade/Compass (MP) require the 'grey' adapter
    (see below) for the access to the second high-speed CAN bus.
    The LX and SX interfaces require 'blue' adapter for the access to the middle-speed CAN bus.
    The OBDLink LX or SX devices are recommended for other Fiat/Alfa Romeo/Lancia CAN-based cars with the low-speed CAN bus on pins 1 & 9 of the OBD plug. The 'yellow' adapter is required for the access to the low-speed CAN bus.
  • OBDKey Bluetooth/USB/WLAN. This is a universal interface supporting all the control units used in FCA cars. Especially recommended for the non-CAN-based cars. It's a good choice (and the only one under Android) for the cars like Alfa Romeo 145/146/156/166.
  • ELM327 - based USB / Bluetooth / WLAN interfaces for PC and bluetooth/WiFi-enabled Android and Windows devices. All CAN units are supported and some on K-Line. Make sure the ELM 327 is of version 1.3 and above.
    Warning: There are many suppliers of these interfaces, but not all of the available interfaces are compatible with AlfaOBD!
    An ebay interface based on an ELM327 clone might work fine, with a bit of luck. But quite afew of the interfaces are defective, they can't establish connection to the car. If AlfaOBD displays a message 'Interface reports NO DATA' or 'Interface reports CAN ERROR' when attempting connection to the car, this is most probably a sign that you have a defective interface. Such an interface might work fine with other diagnostic software using OBDII/EOBD protocol, but it has issues with AlfaOBD because of a different diagnostic protocol used.
    It is recommended to use an ELM327 interface tested with AlfaOBD.
    For example, the interfaces sold by Electronic-Fuchs.de and Obdauto.fr have been tested for compatibility with AlfaOBD.
  • Kiwi 3 Bluetooth LE (Android only). All CAN units are supported and some of K-Line. The interface features very low power consumption.
  • KLLine USB interface. AlfaOBD PC version only due to limitations of Android OS. No CAN support so it can be used on the non-CAN based vehicles. For example, interfaces supplied by Electronic-Fuchs.de, Obdauto.fr , and ECUFix.com are supported.

Note: USB interfaces are supported on the Android devices via On-The-Go. Check if your Android device has support for On-The-Go and get a corresponding adapter.

Note: Some WLAN interfaces have built-in support for Android (like OBDLink MX WiFi), the WLAN connection to the other ones is only available from the Android devices having the ad-hoc Wi-Fi support enabled. Before purchasing a WLAN interface for use with the Android version of AlfaOBD please check if it is possible to configure your particular Android device for the ad-hoc Wi-Fi. Typically it requires that the device to be rooted and the Wi-Fi driver replaced with a modified one.

It is recommended to purchase an adapter or set of adapters to be able to communicate to the control units other than those connected to the pin 7 (K-line) and 6 and 14 (CAN high line) of the car OBD plug.
