Currently you are on the First Page header of Chapter 1. Click the the Next button to get to the Left page header (you do not put a header above the Chapter title, it looks silly). If you have the bug I have, the Next button will do nothing: place your cursor in the first left page, manually! Now click the Field button in the Header and Footer tab. Go to page 2 and then double-click the white area where the Header is to display the Header & Footer Tools Design tab and before you type the necessary header, make sure you deselect the Link to Previous command in the Navigation group for all Sections. While in the Section 2 Header, enter your necessary Header. In Word how to insert HEADERS and FOOTERS. In this Microsoft Word Tutorial I demonstrate how to put information, text, images and page numbers into the head.
Are you creating separate sections in Word for each chapter, just to have different chapter names in the headers or footers?
- Open a new Microsoft Word document. At the top of the document, double-click to open the header. Another option is to go to the “Insert” tab on the top bar, click on “Header” and then on “Edit Header”.
- Go to page 2 and then double-click the white area where the Header is to display the Header & Footer Tools Design tab and before you type the necessary header, make sure you deselect the Link to Previous command in the Navigation group for all Sections. While in the Section 2 Header, enter your necessary Header.
No more!
Introducing: the StyleRef field.
The StyleRef field works the same as a cross-reference, but where a cross-reference points to one specific place in a document, the StyleRef field points to the nearest paragraph of a specific style, for example a Heading 1 style. The field can show the paragraph text (chapter name) , or the paragraph number (chapter number). The chapter name and number is automatically updated when a new chapter starts.
This way, you can link all the headers or footers with a chapter name in them to previous, and only need to format the first one.
To insert a StyleRef field with an automatic Heading 1 chapter name into your text, do as follows:
- Place the cursor where you want to insert the chapter name (usually in the header or footer).
- On the ribbon, click the Insert tab.
- In the Text group, click Quick Parts > Field.
- In the Field names list, click on StyleRef.
- In the Style name list, click on Heading 1.
- Select the Preserve formatting during updates checkbox.
- To insert the chapter name, leave all other check boxes cleared. To insert the chapter number instead, select the Insert paragraph number check box.
- Click OK.

NOTE 1: If you want the chapter number AND chapter name in the same header/footer, insert this field twice. One pointing at the number, and the other one pointing at the name.
