I like my Pyrex digital thermometer and timer combo. It has a probe which you put in the food item/syrup/oven etc. Which reads the temperature. You can even set the thing to alert you when it reaches a certain temperature. The numbers are reasonably big and much easier to read than a standard thermometer. Here's a link: digital thermometer.

Set the timer or the temperature and the alarm will let you know when the food is ready. This Pyrex Accessories 2-in-1 thermometer/timer allows you to measure the temperature (in Celsius or Fahrenheit) of your food as it cooks--without opening the oven door. A thin cord attaches the commercial-quality probe to a digital display screen that sits on your countertop. The true beauty of this gadget is that a timer sounds once the preset temperature of the food is reached, allowing you to read in the other room without having to continually check the temperature reading. This gadget works equally well on the stovetop, and also functions as a simple digital kitchen timer.
An adjustable display stand lets you swivel the screen to the angle of your liking, while a magnet on the back of the stand gives you the convenient option to place or store the display on your refrigerator. Too bad the ensemble doesn't have a neat contraption to store the timer and probe together; the nature of the probe makes it difficult to coil, so you end up with a cumbersome mess in the kitchen drawer.

I called, explained the problem (Thermo Temp always reads HI or LO) and the customer service rep immediately said 'Yeah, that's the probe. We'll send you a new one.' Fanstastic response!I have used this thermometer to be able to get medium-rare roasts and steaks, for bread and for candy. I highly recommend it. The thermometer part can be plugged and unplugged, so when the thermometer is unplugged, it is just like a single-function timer. The back has 2 strong magnets that hold well to my refrigerator. It also works well on a counter top with the hinged display. My calibration check was within 1 degree F for both boiling water and ice water. Has C/F switch on back. For use as a timer, there are buttons to set the hours and minutes, but there is no way to set the seconds. The seconds are displayed as it counts down, but you can only time whole minutes. So you can cook a 2-minute egg or a 3-minute egg, but if you like 2-1/2 minute eggs, you should look for a different timer. All buttons are easy to use. |
